Changes to Heavy Vehicle National Law
General Mass Limits (GML) have increased to align with the former Concessional Mass Limits (CML). CML no longer exists under the MDL Regulation.
Euro VI concessions have been expanded to include road trains.
Tow mass ratio requirements for tag trailers have been amended, including associated conditions.
The maximum length limit has increased from 19 metres to 20 metres for certain heavy vehicle combinations, where the applicable requirements are met. This applies to:
- prime mover and semitrailer combinations
- rigid truck and pig trailer combinations
- rigid truck and dog trailer combinations
- rigid truck and tag trailer combinations.
B-doubles are not included in the 20-metre length limit and remain subject to their existing requirements. Brake requirements apply to certain trailers used in combinations longer than 19 metres and up to 20 metres. Trailers over 10 tonnes Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) must be fitted with brakes compliant with ADR 38/05, or a later applicable standard, and powered by the towing vehicle.
Heavy vehicle operators should ensure their vehicles and combinations comply with the MDL Regulation requirements before operating under the new mass and dimension limits. For more detail please see:
